Reviewing 2013 and Briefly Catching Up

I haven't blogged in quite a while. My last published blog was in June 2012. Way too much has happened since then, but I thought I'd do at least one blog just before the year 2013 is up. At least it wasn't as bad as the 20-month hiatus I had last time I stopped blogging.

I won't go through all, not even most that happened for me since then, nor can I offer my commentary on the things that has happened on this world since then. That would be impossible. In fact, if I'm lucky, I'll probably just briefly discuss only 1% of what I want to discuss...

Ever since I last wrote, I've taken up a new venture. Along with my laundry business, as well as my motivational business (although limited), I've taken a position as an Operations Manager for a medical import/export business for my father's business in JAGAS International. So, as you can imagine, I've had a lot in my plate. Currently, I'm still working there. I've had some valuable experience, but I would be lying to you if I didn't say that it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows. In fact, there has been more valleys and rough and rocky roads. Let's just say, that being "invested" in a business (in more ways than one), with very little help, mentorship, and commitment from the CEO, without a chance for passion to develop, really takes a toll on you. Still, I think it could've made me a better person (although the jury is still out on that).

I had the Shingles, while only in my 30s. And it sucks. The commercials don't exaggerate. No further discussion.

The DC Sports scene (which I've said before is a significant passion of mine), has been interesting. All teams (other than the Washington Wizards, although with that team, we might start seeing their peaks now), has been experiencing it's peaks and valleys. The Capitals started out the lockout season in a slow manner, but went on to win their division. The Washington Nationals, had the best record in baseball in 2012, but underachieved in 2013, mostly because of pressure of high expectations. And then, there's my beloved Redskins...

(Before I give my thought on the Redskins, I will not give any commentary (as of yet), regarding the team name controversy, and whether or not it's racist. I will address this in probably a future blog post. I digress...)

The Redskins have definitely experienced their peaks and valleys as well. Last year, we drafted a magnificent rookie QB in Robert Griffin III, whom the organization and most of the fanbase believe is the franchise's long term solution in QB. They mortgaged the future and gave up several draft picks for an opportunity to pick up Robert. It paid dividends immediately, as my team won the division for the first time in 12 years. RG3 wins rookie of the year, and sets several franchise records as a rookie, and has the whole Redskins fanbase celebrating.

Then came the playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks. That's when everything started going downhill. The Redskins were up 14-0 early in the 2nd quarter, RG3 took a hit on the sidelines, and hasn't been the same. Later in the game, he tore his ACL and the Redskins ended up losing the game, and their season. Since then, a lot of speculated controversy took place between the coach and the QB, and that drama carried on to the season and led to a 3-13 disappointing season, and Coach Mike Shanahan and most of his staff being fired in the end of a season. Now they are in search of a new coach, with so much uncertainty in the season. Needless to say, the organization is a mess, and this fan base is restless. I for one, have and always been loyal to the Redskins, and that won't change. I have a healthy love/hate relationship with this team, as like most fans of this organization.

Obamacare: have you signed up for health insurance yet? The deadline is creeping. I like to keep my hopes up regarding the healthcare law, as I'm actually for people getting healthcare especially when they need it, but it has truly been a mess. Right now, the President is looking like a jerk, and his supporters are looking like extreme apologists.

However, Congress and politics as a whole has been a mess. Too much in-fighting going on, that it has practically divided the country. So many hot button issues, Trayvon Martin, Planned Parenthood, Gay Marriage, Trayvon Martin, etc, etc, has divided the country. And frankly, it kinda sickens me. Ever wonder why I dislike politics?

As far as everything else is concerned, regarding next generation entertainment gaming consoles, I recommend the PS4 over the XBox One, and the Wii U. I have a Wii U (as it was bought mainly for my nephew), and I haven't really tried out the other 2 systems yet, but based on graphics, playability, and bang for your buck, PS4 is the recommended system.

I've also gotten into a few TV shows. I honestly haven't really followed Modern Family and Big Bang Theory until it got into syndication, but since I've discovered them, I've been borderline obsessed. I've also gotten into watching "The Game of Thrones", which has a great story arc and a lot of plot twists (which aren't a surprise to those who read the books, or those who claim to read the books but just read the Wiki spoilers). Needless to say, GoT is one of the best shows I've seen in a while. I haven't gotten into "Breaking Bad" as of yet, but I promise I will, as it is highly acclaimed everywhere.

I've also gotten into the Gangnam Style craze, along with the billions of people around the world... for the 30 seconds it has lasted. Those crazy South Koreans. Never gotten into that Harlem Shake craze though.

But regarding 2013, it's been a mixed bag for me. There were days when I felt really low and lost a lot and have been utterly disappointed that I haven't been able to accomplish some personal goals, but there were also other days when I felt so blessed and lucky to be where I am today and have gone farther than I am a few years ago.

As far as plans for 2014... I know for sure that it has some potential to be a good year. I say that every year, but I mean it this year, as I feel I have planted a lot of seeds in 2013 to make 2014 an even better year. In fact, I'll go out on a limb and say that I think 2014 can potentially be a milestone year for me. After all, I'm turning 33 in 2014, which I think is a significant age for me.

My thoughts on Obamacare

Earlier this morning, President Obama's affordable healthcare act has been upheld by the Supreme Court, declaring that it is not unconstitutional. This is a significant day in American history, and this issue has seem to have divided the country. I would be remissed if I didn't comment on it, so I shall give a few of my opinions. (And I mean, just a few).

Normally, I would try to stay away from political posts (growing up in the DC Metro area, that is very uncharacteristic of me), but, as an American citizen, this ruling has a huge impact on me, and the hundreds of millions of American citizens nationwide.

I'm normally neutral and moderate when it comes to a lot of issues, whether political or life. In fact, it's a recurring theme in my life is that I usually end up get "caught in the middle" when it comes to a lot of things. This issue is no exception. I love the idea that all American citizens should have health insurance. Everybody in this country should get the kind of care that they deserve, and if people are sick, they deserve to be treated. As far as forcing them to get it, (and if you don't, you'll get penalized on your taxes), I'm not so much of a fan of. In a way, I did feel it was unconstitutional to delegate to Americans that they SHOULD get health insurance, as it's not really constitutional to delegate to Americans to buy something mandatory that the government tells you to get. But, looking from it on the other side of the coin, it's obvious that this country does have a health problem, whether it be the obesity epidemic, terminal diseases such as cancer, as well as the thousands of mutating common diseases each and every single day. So with that, I do see both sides of the coin, and I am pretty neutral about it.

But, I will say I'm slightly more on the side FOR Obama-care. As I said, I don't like the idea of having to pay a penalty on my taxes if I don't get health insurance. I'm still at that age, where I feel that I'm young and healthy enough where not having health insurance will hurt me, seeing as I haven't been treated in a hospital for an illness or injury for years. I also keep myself in decent shape, nor am I an alcoholic, smoke, or do anything destructive. Hell, for a guy my age, I don't even stay out late most of the time (nor do I desire to). But, having mandatory health insurance is like having insurance anywhere else. Sooner or later, you're probably gonna need it. Hell, when 2014 comes (when the tax penalty is supposedly going to be in effect), chances are I probably won't be as healthy as I am now.

One thing I don't like about this, if this law is passed, this would be a huge opportunity for insurance companies to gouge their prices. As someone with a BA in Economics, I do have a bit of an economist in me. If this law passes, and should healthcare become mandatory, this will be an opportunity for the companies to say, "oh, the government is telling everybody to get insurance, so let's charge everyone a high price for it". Honestly, that's the same reason why gas prices are so high today (although it got lower in the past few weeks).

So with that, I will say that I do have a moderate take on it. But, I will be honest and say I don't know too much about Obamacare to fully comment on it, so I'll stop there on the opinions. However, because the Supreme Court ruled FOR Obamacare, doesn't necessarily mean it will become law. The Congress is still full of Republicans, and you know that they will do what they can to repeal this law.

We will see what happens.

Is Your Rent Too Damn High?

Jimmy McMillan thinks so...

In fact, "Rent is too Damn High" is not only the whole platform that he runs behind, but also the party that he represents. (High rent/cost of living or operation = bad economy, less jobs, hungry kids, poverty = EVIL).

Not to mention, he's a karate expert.

I'm not going as far as saying that he would win (or if a lot of people are going to take him seriously and actually vote for him), but he's definitely gonna get some attention come election day on Tuesday. (If he hasn't done so already, since he's gotten a few million people to watch his debate footage in mere days.)

I do agree with him though... rent is too damn high. Have you seen how much rent costs on average in downtown DC? sheesh

Jawdropping Political Speech

In the spirit of election primaries today here in Maryland, I thought I'd share a video I saw a few days ago here on the Internet.

Just want to say, that someone who speaks in public passionately, I can appreciate it. But as a citizen who votes for leaders to represent us, I am flabbergasted. Let's just say, if you are going to pursue speaking, can serve as a good reference guide (mostly, of what not to do). Gonna keep the commentary to a minimum, just watch...

Quick Thoughts on Obama's State of the Union

People who know me would know that I'm not too big on political commentary. I don't like to talk about politics, and I would like to keep it that way. Therefore, I'm just going to give a few thoughts on this blog of what I saw in the State of the Union yesterday. So, when I say "quick" I really mean quick.

I will admit, I didn't watch the whole SOTU address. I was switching in between watching this, and the Washington Capitals vs Anaheim Ducks hockey game. But, as soon as the Caps scored 3 goals in under 3 minutes in the 3rd period, the game wasn't competitive anymore, so I decided to check out what the Prez had to say...

I have tons of respect for Obama. He is a huge inspiration to many in this country (including myself) because he's the first black president, he's a great speaker, and he has lots of great plans. And even though I am registered to vote as a Republican, I voted for him in '08. And, from listening to some of his speech yesterday, he seems like he has lots of great plans to turn around the economy, healthcare, the environment, etc. But having a plan, and talking about a plan is one thing... actually getting it done is another. I know that the last administration put him so far down a hole that it's gonna be hard to dig out of, but since we live in a "microwave society" where we have to get everything right now... Americans have already gotten impatient. And, unless he can really convince people that this country really is improving... his chances of a re-election in 2012 is going to be highly damaged... so much so, that not even his good public speaking skills can save him. People voted for him in '08 because through him, he has offered hope and inspiration to millions. But things are so bad in America right now, that most people would rather see things getting done rather than hearing great oratory.

I'm gonna end it right there. (I did say this was gonna be short). I know millions already feel like this about Obama, but I just thought I'd let everyone know where I stand regarding it. And since he gave his first SOTU yesterday, I thought this would the perfect time to do it. I can talk about this more, but like I said, I honestly don't like to get all touchy-touchy political on people, since politics is always a highly sensitive subject matter. Therefore, I'll just leave it at that.

Honestly, if I'm not talking about motivation and business, I'd rather talk about doing pushups, the Superbowl, or other sports... Hey, maybe I will! (Keep an eye out for future posts).
