Thoughts on Wrestlemania XXX

It’s been about 2 months since I’ve written an entry here in this blog (Superbowl XLIX). Of course, I was practically wrong in every way, so congratulations to the Seattle Seahawks. I’ve been quite busy with many things in between now and then, so it’s been hard to find a little bit of time to do things. I’m still running 3 businesses. Figuratively speaking, one, which has a lot of my full investment, another which I’m kind of keeping afloat (until the captain is able to wake up and steer the ship), while the last I’m still keeping the fuel passionately burning. I don’t intend to write this blog entry to talk about what I’ve been up to the last few months. (I’m sure if you’ve read this blog before, you might have an idea of how it may sound).

As I’m writing this entry, I am actually 10,000 feet above the air, on a flight en route to New Orleans, for a much needed vacation. It’s rare I take a vacation, and I probably should take a few more to enjoy life. I last had a vacation last August when I went to Las Vegas with my brothers and we celebrated our Summer birthdays together, but before that, my last “needed time off” (when I didn’t go out of town for business), was probably in 2011 when I went to Atlanta, but before that, in Spain in September 2009 (which I briefly discussed in this blog). My brother Angelico and I are on our way to watch World Wrestling Entertainment’s (WWE) annual marquee event, Wrestlemania. This is the 30th edition of the show, and we are both avid wrestling fans, and we both decided months ago to take some time off to catch this event, as well as several other wrestling events surrounding that, as it seems to be a significant show, with it being the 30th edition and all.

Ever since Wrestlemania 27 in Atlanta, Georgia (which my brother and I also attended), my brother tries to attend each of these yearly Wrestlemania shows. With the exception of last year’s show (which he missed because of a wedding), he has held true. I only choose to go every few years when it’s worthwhile, as my schedule probably prohibits me to, plus, I have better ways to invest my “resources”. Regardless, the show itself, and the events and the week leading up to the show are a spectacle within itself, and it’s recommended, not only for wrestling fans, but for people who are just looking to have a great experience. 

I’ll get into why I’m a fan of wrestling (and of the wrestling business) in full depth in perhaps another entry. But as I said, my brother and I are huge avid fans of this business, and know a lot of the “inside information” and inner “workings” of this business. The fact that it’s “predetermined” (not “fake”), makes this business more intriguing to those who appreciate it. In fact, my brother even tried to get into this business as a performer at some point (until his age, worn out knees, and locker room politics caught up to him).

I am really writing this blog to offer my thoughts on the spectacle that is Wrestlemania, and on the actual show itself.

While down in New Orleans, we plan on absorbing the culture of the city. It is my first time in NOLA, and it has always been a place that I’ve always wanted to visit, and it’s a place I’ve probably wanted to go to for a while now. If no particular event was taking place, and I had a lot more “resources” (like time and money), I would have probably visited by now. I’ve heard so much about the culture, architecture, and the people, that it was definitely a city in my must visit list. Aside from briefly sightseeing and hanging out in the French Quarter and Bourbon Street, we plan to catch a few independent wrestling shows in the area (such as Dragon Gate, and Ring of Honor), as well as possibly a few conventions. We plan to attend the Hall of Fame ceremony the night before the show, and of course, enjoy the main show on our final night here on Sunday. We will catch a plane back to DC on late Monday afternoon.

Here are my thoughts on the actual Wrestlemania show, and the card itself. If you’re a wrestling fan, it could be an entertaining read. If not, a lot of what I’ll be saying may just be a bore. Brace yourself, I have a lot to say…

Personally, I think the show is stacked. WWE says every year, that the current Wrestlemania will be the biggest of all time. Many times, it ends up falling below many expectations. However, in this case, it looks as though they are making a true effort to really make this possibly the biggest they’ve ever had. With the launch of their new digital network, it has even been said that with the evolution of technology, this business may be due for another boom period. History has shown that every time there has been an evolution in media and technology, wrestling has experienced a “boom period”. In the mid-80s, network television was starting to evolve, which brought us the “Wrestling Renaissance era” of Hulk Hogan, the Ultimate Warrior, Ric Flair, and Randy Savage. In the late 90’s, we had the evolution of cable TV and a relatively young internet, which brought us the “Attitude Era” (arguably, the most successful era in pro wrestling), with Superstars such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, the Rock, and the NWO. Now, with the evolution of On-Demand digital content, and how information is delivered, with the launch of the WWE Network, this can possibly the start of another boom period for the professional wrestling business. However, I do believe this is contingent on the success of this show. Which may explain why they are stacking the card with great talent and story lines.

All their top names (with the exception of CM Punk… which is a whole other issue) is working on this show. Many throwbacks that are familiar to many (Undertaker, Triple H, Batista, Kane and Brock Lesnar) are featured in the card, along with a great mix of their current top stars, such as Randy Orton, John Cena, and Daniel Bryan, and up-and-comers, such as the Shield and Bray Wyatt. In fact, a lot of the roster who has at least a sliver of talent has a chance to showcase themselves in this card.

Here are my detailed predictions/thoughts on each match on this card.

4-way Tag-Team match for the WWE Tag Team Titles:

Uso Brothers (c) vs Jack Swagger & Cesaro vs Ryback & Curtis Axel vs Los Matadores

I don’t really have too much thoughts on this match, however, I do think it has a good balance of high energy fact paced wrestling, and power. Therefore, it should still make for an entertaining match. This match will probably grow the seed of a break up between the “Real Americans” team of Swagger & Cesaro, therefore although I do think they are deserving of a tag title run, it probably won’t happen because of these circumstances. I see the Uso brothers retaining in this match, which I said should be highly entertaining because of the contrast of styles.

Predicted Winner: Uso Brothers

Triple H vs Daniel Bryan

This is probably going to be the first match of the actual card, or what I would like to call, the undercard main feature, or the match that sets the whole pace of the show. The storyline behind this match is, that Triple H, who legitimately runs the WWE as an Executive VP (and COO on TV), is holding the most “over” fan favorite in years in Daniel Bryan. This storyline has been taking place since Bryan cleanly won the WWE Title from John Cena in Summerslam, in which Triple H later underhandedly destroyed him and practically handpicked his own champion in Randy Orton. Between August and now, this storyline of “The Man” holding down “The Every Man”, has taken forefront. And it looks like it will finally culminate here in Wrestlemania, with the winner of this match being inserted to the last match in the card for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. That said, this is going to be an entertaining, but tireless and brutal battle, with eventually, the fan favorite in Daniel Bryan coming out on top. Although, some can make the argument that putting Triple H in the main event adds more credibility to it, it’s clear WWE seems to want to showcase and build up their current, as well as up-and-coming stars. Which would mean that Bryan winning this match is the only logical conclusion.

Predicted Winner: Daniel Bryan

Andre the Giant Memorial 30-man Battle Royal

This is what is considered to be the filler match, that features practically most of the main roster. Although, when a match similar to this was done in Wrestlemanias past, it seemed to be a random occurrence with random winners (such as the Great Khali, and Yoshi Tatsu) that didn’t really build any stars. They’ve placed more emphasis on it this time around with Hulk Hogan putting a heavy endorsement on it, and putting Andre the Giant’s name on it. They’ve also used significant TV time in their programming to build up this match. That said, the match will be booked in a way so practically everybody can show what they can do (or can’t do), but I’ll be surprised if the match goes over 15 minutes. It may sound ridiculous, but I think the Miz will win this battle royal. He’s had a lot of PPV “anti-momentum” going for him, and he has never “lost” in Wrestlemania, so I’m picking him as the one to win this match. Not to mention, this could give him an opportunity to get back into the “upper-mid card” and have people talking about him again. Although, the person I would like to see win this most is Zack Ryder, although, it is highly unlikely it will happen and would be a huge curveball if it does.

Predicted Winner: The Miz

The Shield vs Kane and the New Age Outllaws

On paper, the way the younger, more talented Shield stable has been built up in the last year and a half, they should destroy their much older opposition at Wrestlemania. However, I think that is what the company wants you to think. Something is going to happen in this match that will cost the fan favorites the match. Either a turn with one of the Shield members, or an unmentioned X-factor interfering (such as Kevin Nash, old NWO, or Kliq members?, etc). Fact is, it’s not gonna end clean, and will set the wheels in motion to get the Shield broken up and experience individual success. Personally, if I was booking this match, I would have Kane do something on Raw that will stack the cards against them, like have them fight each other for Dean Ambrose’s US Title. But, since they didn’t do that, looks like it will go as is, and a Shield loss will be less believable. Somehow, I do think they’ll find a way to book them for a loss.

Predicted Winner: Kane and the Outlaws

John Cena vs Bray Wyatt

Don’t really want to get to the story of this match, because it’s a little complex, but the buildup for this match has been spectacular. All I got to say, is that one of their biggest names in John Cena is booked to go against one of their hottest new up-and-comers in Bray Wyatt, who is probably the most intriguing character since probably the Undertaker. I don’t think Cena will lose the match, but he will somehow put Bray Wyatt over. It will be booked as a gruesome match, with probably Bray Wyatt dominating the whole way, with Cena just sliding by with a victory, sort of like how the Triple H vs Undertaker was in WM XXVII.

Predicted Winner: John Cena

Vickie Guerrero Divas Championship Invitational

This is probably gonna be the “Bathroom Break” match, which is the “intermission” match that people probably care least about to slow down the show. This match won’t be long, and I’ll be surprised if it lasts more than 8 minutes. I see AJ Lee retaining her championship. If any of the other divas won it (with the exception of Tamina, Naomi, or Brie Bella), it would seem like a random result without meaning. The reasons why I don’t think the 3 aforementioned will win is because Naomi doesn’t seem to be a marquee name (yet), and it wouldn’t make sense if she won, Brie Bella doesn’t need the championship to stay credible since she has her reality show, and Tamina won’t win because it can set a storyline down the road for a feud with AJ if she doesn't win the title. So with that, AJ continues her run as one of the more successful WWE women wrestlers in recent memory.

Projected Winner: AJ Lee

Brock Lesnar vs Undertaker

I am excited for this match, but it’s very predictable and not much to it. It will probably booked as a brutal slugfest that’s gonna tell a good story, with Brock Lesnar probably dominating a good amount of the match as a monster and credible former UFC star. However, Undertaker will go toe-to-toe with him and will be competitive at times. In the end, Undertaker’s streak isn’t going to end. If Undertaker gets hit by a bus in the middle of the ring, so long as it’s Wrestlemania, he will kick out at two every single time.

Projected Winner: The Undertaker

Main Event: Randy Orton (c) vs Batista vs (Daniel Bryan) for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship

This match is the coup de gras of the card. I can’t really tell how this match is gonna be booked, but the crowd should be up for this match, and they will finally see their hero win the belt against two comparable opponents who were the company’s “chosen ones”. This is the result that makes sense, as the feud and storyline of “The Man vs The Everyman” has been going on since August, and it will be the payoff for the protagonist, and the people cheering for him. If this match doesn’t disappoint, like I think it won’t, I think this may be a match that people may be talking about for a while. 

Projected Winner: Daniel Bryan (new champion)

As you can see, I truly am a fan of this business, and have kind of put thought into this. It makes me look like a nerd, or a “mark”, but I have been a fan of this business since I was a kid, and although it’s staged, many aspects of it are applicable to be successful in my trade in motivational speaking and in life. (Be engaging, entertaining, always re-invent yourself, work hard, etc). In fact, if I’m ever up to it, I’ll probably write a blog on how being a fan of pro wrestling has helped me in life.

But other than that, that’s what I got to say about Wrestlmania. As I said, if the wrestling business is going to experience another "boom period", it may be contingent on the success of this card. And personally, I think it's gonna deliver. Not sure how it will compare to the greatest and more memorable Wrestlemanias but I truly believe it has potential for greatness, and could get people interested in wrestling again.

"Big Game" Predictions, XLVIII edition

I haven't done a blog for a while, but I wanted to get one in before the "Big Game". (In this entry, I will refer to this game as the "Big Game" because unless you are not an official sponsor of the game, you can get in trouble. I do realize that this rule likely doesn't apply to a blog in the middle of the nether regions of the Internet (like mine), but I thought it would be fun.

Before I get to the predictions, I thought I'd discuss a few of the story lines.

When the Seahawks beat the Redskins in last year's playoffs, my resentment for the Seahawks were magnified. Don't get me wrong, they are a great organization, and are actually an antithesis of how my favorite team was built, but them knocking my team off the playoffs 3 times in a row doesn't help me in wanting to cheer for them. Not to mention, Richard Sherman taunting Trent Williams at the end of that game didn't sit right with me either. So, therefore, based on that, you can guess what team I'm not pulling for.

Speaking of Richard Sherman, believe it or not, during the last couple of weeks, I've actually warmed up a little bit to the guy. As I said, I didn't really appreciate his schtick since he pulled against the Redskins a year ago as well, but any one has to admit that he's a calculated genius. He backed up his words in the football field by making that huge play, and pulled the WWE-like promo in the end. At first, because I didn't like him too much going in, I thought it was a bit annoying. But the more I thought about it, the more I found that it was pure genius (given that he was a salutatorian in high school, and graduated in Stanford with a 3.7 GPA, so he's definitely not dumb). The majority of the last two weeks were focused on him, and all are talking about him. If he wasn't a household name before then, he surely is now. The fact that the Big Game is in New York also helps his cause too.

Seahawks are a good organization, so if they win, even though I don't currently like them, I surely won't be terribly mad if they do, like I would be if, say, the Dallas Cowboys, won (although, I would prefer them not to win). Therefore, I'd be rooting for the Broncos. There's so many reasons I would cheer for the Broncos...

One, I love Peyton Manning as a football player. He is probably the best football player I have ever seen for as long as I have had the ability to mildly understand the game of football. Barry Sanders is in that argument, but his heyday was just before that time, and he retired at a time when he arguably hasn't given his best yet. He's already won one title, and he's already a first ballot hall of famer if he doesn't win another, but winning this one is probably very important to him. One, he's gonna be one of the rare QBs that won multiple titles. However, if he wins this one, he will be one to win one in different teams. That's a rarity.

I also wouldn't mind seeing Champ Bailey win. He started his career here in Washington as a Redskin, and he was one of my favorite players when he played here (I had his burgundy "24"). He gave a lot when he played here, and it continued when he was traded to Denver. He will probably make the Hall of Fame as well, so if he wins a title, it can definitely help his chances. He's a great player, and I will root for him.

So with that, I think this will be a good game. Seattle's defense is tough, and it's always been said that defense wins championships. And, in my opinion, if this Seattle defense played last year's Ravens offense, Seattle would've won last year's title. But, this Denver offense is a whole different monster. Not only do you have Peyton Manning slinging the rock, but he can sling them to 4 solid pass catching receivers. As good and as big as the Seahawks secondary is, I don't know if they can shut down this attack. Not to mention, once they get up, they can play ball control offense as well.

Not to mention, although Russell Wilson is a good young QB, and they have an awesome running game, I see the Broncos taking the lead early and not likely relinquishing it. If they get down like they did last game against the Niners (which you got to admit, a lot of calls went their way too), I don't see them getting back in it.

Prediction: Denver 31 Seattle 24 (so I have the "Over")

With that, here are some predictions for the crazy prop bets...
National Anthem: Over (2 min 30 sec)
Number of Times Peyton Manning Says "Omaha": Surprisingly, Under (27 1/2)
Number of Times "Beast Mode" Will Be Mentioned": Over (2)
Color Gatorade Dumped on Winning Coach: Orange (3/1)

There are more prop bets, but I don't wanna go through all of them. Remember, these are for entertainment purposes only.

Don't Trust "Honesty"

I am up a little bit early today. Can't figure out if this is extra energy (as I've been taking care of myself a little better), or insomnia (as I still have had quite a bit on my mind), but never the less, I thought I will spend a bit of this time doing a blog.

As someone who studied and continuously tries to closely look at human behavior when trying to improve in my craft of being a motivator (although, I will say many aspects of it also naturally fascinate me), there's one particular "life truth" of many that I have learned, and particularly want to share today...

As you can see in the title, it says "Don't Trust 'Honesty'". What I mean by that is, don't trust anyone who is always blatantly working hard trying to convince you they're "honest"...

I'm not going to spend too much time discussing this, but being "honest" doesn't really take convincing. You either naturally are, or you aren't. Genuine honesty is a product of habitual applied good genuine behavior, not a product of practice and rehearsed actions.

Case in point, if somebody usually begins a sentence with... "Hey (your name), I'm totally gonna be honest with you..." or "To be honest..." or something to that regard, chances are, they are probably, naturally a liar. Why? Why would one have to tell (or try to convince) somebody that they are gonna be honest by preceding a statement with that phrase, unless they aren't honest in all, or even a lot of the time? They wouldn't. I know most of us at many points in our lives use this particular phrase to precede a statement, but you will observe, that most who do it the most often, are probably the most dishonest people you know.

If someone ever tells you... "I'm probably the most honest person you would ever know", my advice is... RUN!

What I learned in my short time so far on this Earth, is those who really are "honest" and have great intentions truly live it in their every day lives through good habits, mentality, attitude, and genuine desire to help your fellow man. If you continually have to try to convince others, by continually broadcasting it, then you come off as non genuine, counterproductive, and probably the opposite of what you're trying to portray.

These are just a few things I learned from reading a few books, and through general observations with interacting with people. Agree or not, it doesn't particularly matter, but feel free to debate me on this if it pleases you. Didn't want to make this blog too long... just wanted to get it out there.

My Thoughts on Debt (and General Financial Management)

I don't know why I feel I have to write on this. Maybe, it's because we are a couple of weeks removed from the holiday season, and I had a deep conversation about credit card debt with one of my customers a few weeks back. It is something that I've always seemed sort of had some kind of a passion for. Ever since I was young, my parents have always told me I had a natural knack for not getting trouble with money, and whatever money I had (whether a small or a reasonable amount), I've always seem to do decent with it.

Whenever I see something I like, after some thought, more often than not, I would buy it. The key phrase there... "after some thought". About 90-95% of the time, everything I buy, is not an impulse decision. However, even if that's the case, that doesn't mean I won't get buyer's remorse in some of the things I buy. There will still be a lot of times when I thought about what I wanted to buy, I bought that said thing and I had a thought in my mind... "hmmm... is this all? was this really worth the money I paid for it?". Then I spend time justifying in my head that I made the right decision in spending the money, and get as much utility as I can out of the thing that I bought. And, because of that, it's good.

But, on the flip side, there are also often times, that I see something I like, and I don't end up getting it. Maybe it's because of the circumstances, or it's something else, and for some reason, I prevent myself from buying it. For example, I am a member of Costco, and I actually do most of my "necessity shopping" there. Just because Costco is a price club warehouse with a lot of desirable items (with discounted price), there are times when you would be more than tempted to buy a surplus of something (some of which you may not even need), and you have to try to convince yourself not to buy it. Call it a "buyer's conscience" if you will. I think some people who have this "buyer's conscience" and is in tuned with it, usually are okay when it comes to money matters.

As far as how I feel about debt. I said this publicly before, I think it's one of the worst things in the world, and could possibly be the bane of human existence. Frankly, debt sucks. The thought of owing someone, or some corporation money is probably one of the worst feelings I have as a human. In fact, sometimes, being a in debt almost feels almost like you are part of slavery, since you owe practically part of your existence to your debtor(s). As someone who's ran a few businesses, and taken a few risks in my time, I admittedly financed a few things off of debt. In fact, I probably had thousands of dollars in credit card debt whenever I financed my OBECorp projects. And believe me, it didn't feel good owing credit card companies money for a lot of months (luckily the credit card I had, had no interest for the first 12 months). Still, it was a wonder how I survived so long.

The only thing credit cards are really good for, is for building credit history. Which is why that despite that I hate debt, I still have 3 different credit cards. But, usually, when I put something on the card, I would pay off the balance by the statement, so therefore, I don't get into (much) debt, and the credit cards won't make too much money from me.

But that's actually my general thought on debt... it doesn't make sense to buy something, and pay more for it down the road than what it's actually worth, knowing that by the time you finish paying for it, it likely won't be worth half of what it was when you paid for it. When I bought the iPhone 5 when it came out in September 2012, I really wanted it. It was expensive as heck. But, I had to make sure I was able to afford it and able to pay for it in full. That's the mindset I have when it comes to a lot of things. Unless, I know I would be able to pay for something in a short amount of time, I wouldn't get it.

I suppose the only thing that this debt philosophy doesn't apply to, is investing in property. Unlike most material things, property can actually go up in value. So, as long as you do your due diligence, it's actually recommended that you borrow money to invest in property, so long as you think it's worth it. It is rare anyway, that one person or household will have 6 or 7 figures in a bank and pay for a house in full anyway, so you definitely need help from the banks.

Anyway, I just thought I'd briefly talk about this. I was tempted to get a little bit political and tie my commentary to what the United States is going through with their national debt, but steered clear. People would know how much I detest politics. However, I do have strong feelings about that as well, so I may talk about it in a future blog post, if I feel like it (or if there's demand for it).

Moral of the story: I know this is cliche, but regarding money, it's not what you make, it's what you keep. Do your due diligence when you buy something, and think hard to make sure it's worth it for you. And, in most cases, debt is the debbil, as it sucks owing people money.

We Can Learn a Lot From this Sticker

This morning, I posted a picture on Facebook. When I looked at it, I thought it had more meaning that it had initially. I think it's also artistic in it's own way. I made it my cover photo in Facebook and Twitter. Here's the picture...

For those of you who don't know what this is, this is my "You Are Awesome" sticker. If you have known me at any point in my life between 2009 and now, chances are, you have seen or even gotten this sticker. Of course, the inspiration of this sticker is from my "You Are Awesome" book.

Anyway, as you can see, this sticker is worn out. It has definitely seen better days. However, it is still persevering and sticking on it's respective wall, and encouraging people who can see it, and reminding them of their awesomeness.

No matter how tough you have it, no matter how worn out, beat up, or ripped up you are, you must keep doing what you're doing, with a good attitude, while doing your best to spread your own awesomeness throughout the world. At some point in life (maybe now), we can all relate to what this sticker has been through. I know for sure I can.

You know... we can learn a lot from this sticker.

My thoughts on Obamacare

Earlier this morning, President Obama's affordable healthcare act has been upheld by the Supreme Court, declaring that it is not unconstitutional. This is a significant day in American history, and this issue has seem to have divided the country. I would be remissed if I didn't comment on it, so I shall give a few of my opinions. (And I mean, just a few).

Normally, I would try to stay away from political posts (growing up in the DC Metro area, that is very uncharacteristic of me), but, as an American citizen, this ruling has a huge impact on me, and the hundreds of millions of American citizens nationwide.

I'm normally neutral and moderate when it comes to a lot of issues, whether political or life. In fact, it's a recurring theme in my life is that I usually end up get "caught in the middle" when it comes to a lot of things. This issue is no exception. I love the idea that all American citizens should have health insurance. Everybody in this country should get the kind of care that they deserve, and if people are sick, they deserve to be treated. As far as forcing them to get it, (and if you don't, you'll get penalized on your taxes), I'm not so much of a fan of. In a way, I did feel it was unconstitutional to delegate to Americans that they SHOULD get health insurance, as it's not really constitutional to delegate to Americans to buy something mandatory that the government tells you to get. But, looking from it on the other side of the coin, it's obvious that this country does have a health problem, whether it be the obesity epidemic, terminal diseases such as cancer, as well as the thousands of mutating common diseases each and every single day. So with that, I do see both sides of the coin, and I am pretty neutral about it.

But, I will say I'm slightly more on the side FOR Obama-care. As I said, I don't like the idea of having to pay a penalty on my taxes if I don't get health insurance. I'm still at that age, where I feel that I'm young and healthy enough where not having health insurance will hurt me, seeing as I haven't been treated in a hospital for an illness or injury for years. I also keep myself in decent shape, nor am I an alcoholic, smoke, or do anything destructive. Hell, for a guy my age, I don't even stay out late most of the time (nor do I desire to). But, having mandatory health insurance is like having insurance anywhere else. Sooner or later, you're probably gonna need it. Hell, when 2014 comes (when the tax penalty is supposedly going to be in effect), chances are I probably won't be as healthy as I am now.

One thing I don't like about this, if this law is passed, this would be a huge opportunity for insurance companies to gouge their prices. As someone with a BA in Economics, I do have a bit of an economist in me. If this law passes, and should healthcare become mandatory, this will be an opportunity for the companies to say, "oh, the government is telling everybody to get insurance, so let's charge everyone a high price for it". Honestly, that's the same reason why gas prices are so high today (although it got lower in the past few weeks).

So with that, I will say that I do have a moderate take on it. But, I will be honest and say I don't know too much about Obamacare to fully comment on it, so I'll stop there on the opinions. However, because the Supreme Court ruled FOR Obamacare, doesn't necessarily mean it will become law. The Congress is still full of Republicans, and you know that they will do what they can to repeal this law.

We will see what happens.

A King Gets His Crown - 2012 NBA Champion Miami Heat

I'm quite late in this post, as the series ended 4 days ago (although it seems like it ended much longer than that), but I'd be remissed if I didn't offer my thoughts on the result of the NBA Finals.

With my previous blog highly praising the OKC Thunder, it was clear who my favorite to win the championship was. OKC impressed me as a team, and most especially, impressed me the way they played against the whole Western Conference. They played fundamental team basketball, and got key contributions from all of their players.

That was far from the case when they played Miami in the Finals. Up until Game 4, Russel Westbrook didn't do what was expected of him and run the game like he was supposed to, and James Harden never really got into the series, which was a far cry compared to how they played in the rest of the playoffs.

To the Heat's credit, they were the exact opposite. They got huge contributions from role players such as Shane Battier, and Mike Miller. Miller hit 7 3-pointers in Game 5, to get them to pull away and take the series. Plus, having Bosh back in the lineup during the whole series also helped a lot, as his presence was clear in this series, compared to the previous series when he wasn't playing.

You also have to give credit where credit is due, and recognize LeBron James' outstanding play. In games 2, 3, 4,and 5 he was clutch. Game 5, he closed the series and got a triple double. He truly put the team on his back and carried them to the championship. He undoubtedly deserved the MVP.

Now, I will admit, I haven't always been the biggest LeBron fan, but not for the reasons that most people don't like him. But before I get into that, I want to say that I always respected his ability as an athlete, and is questionably, one of the greatest specimens the sport of basketball has ever seen. As far as his character goes, all most people criticize about him is what they see portrayed as in public or by the media, which is a self-absorbed, egotistical, self-entitled jerk. But, for all we know, he probably is a much better person than he is portrayed, so I don't judge him based on that either. But, the reason why I haven't always been a huge LeBron fan, is because, as a Wizards fan, he has continually broke our hearts in the playoffs. But, even then, after watching his performance in the playoffs, however you may feel about him, you have to give him his due. He deserves the championship.

But, now that he has his championship, all the comparisons to Michael Jordan has already started. Although I see why people have to make this comparison, I don't think it's fair, as they are two different types of players with different styles of play, from different eras, with different types of talent to work with. But, if asked the question "do you think Lebron will match MJ's win total, I will answer with a no, simply because in this era of free agency, where championship teams are easily broken up, and where players always go to the best situations, I can't see him winning 6 championships. (You have to remember that during the Jordan era, it was before the lockout shortened season of 1999 (?), so it's unfair to compare that).

With all that being said, congrats to the Heat. Seeing as they are in the same division as my Washington Wizards, I won't want to see them win too many more championships, as we have to get through them, to win the division, and ultimately the title. But, I will give credit where credit is due. This team was clearly the best, and they came to play when it mattered.

They deserve it.

Congrats to the Stanley Cup Champion LA Kings

Just wanted to take a moment to make mention and congratulate the 2012 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings. They were far from the best team in the regular season (as they barely got in being the 8th seed in the Western Conference), but they were far and away the best team in the whole Stanley Cup playoffs, which I guess is all that matters.

But, just to summarize this playoff run, with the exception of the two games prior to Game 6, this team was DOMINANT. In their road to the final, through their own conference, they went through the 2-time defending President Trophy winning #1 seed Vancouver Canucks, beating them 4-1, they swept the #2 seed St. Louis Blues, and they beat Pacific Division champion #3 seed Phoenix Coyotes. All teams had good to great goaltenders. Fortunately for them, they had a better one in Conn Smythe trophy winning (Playoff MVP) goalie Jonathan Quick.

Honestly, with the way they dominated the prior 3 series, the series against New Jersey should have been a sweep. But, they kind of rested in their laurels in Game 4 and 5, and could have easily let them back in the series. The knockout game is always the hardest to win. However, they took care of business in Game 6, as they pretty much stomped on their throat when they scored 3 goals on a 5-minute major penalty. It was pretty much over.

I would be remissed if I didn't mention how this would relate to my favorite hockey team, the Washington Capitals. Honestly, the Capitals' run this season is somewhat similar to the Kings' (as they were both teams with mediocre records, and just got hot at the right time). Not to mention, they both seemed to be built with the future with a good amount of young stars, and are both set at goal with a young star minding the net. Where the Caps went wrong was that they let Game 5 against the Rangers get away from them (as they lost the lead from that game with 6.6 seconds to go), to ultimately lose that game. And they just didn't come to play on Game 7.

But, if this franchise can win its first championship ever, there's hope for the Capitals. These days, it's hard to repeat championships in sports. However, I wouldn't be surprised if the Kings will be up there again next season. It would be nice if the Caps will join them, but they first have to find a coach that will get them there that can build on what they did this year.

Now that hockey season is over, I can focus my sports attention to the NBA Finals, which begin tonight. Oklahoma City and Miami should be an entertaining series with some must-see action and story lines. I'm particularly looking forward to it.

Why I'm ecstatic that OKC Thunder is in the NBA Finals

I mentioned this in my last entry from a couple of days ago, but now that it is official from Wednesday's win, I will briefly talk about why I'm stoked that the Oklahoma City Thunder is in the NBA Finals.

For obvious reasons, they are an exciting team playing fundamental team basketball. Add that to the fact, that they have one of the best players in the game today in Kevin Durant. If you have no horse currently in the playoff race, you would probably jump on the OKC bandwagon, just based on how this team was built from the ground up, the correct way, and is now, and looks to be, a force in the NBA for years to come.

For many who don't know, this team was practically built from scratch. When the Supersonics moved from Seattle to OKC, this team was in serious rebuild mode. They got lucky and was grateful to land Kevin Durant with the 2nd pick (apparently, not being able to bench 185 lbs, regardless of how good of a basketball player you are, will knock you down a spot), and this team traded or dumped a lot of veterans, and got a lot of young talent. During the years that followed, they drafted significant pieces such as Russel Westbrook, James Harden, and Serge Ibaka, and this young team grew together. A few trades and free agents later (such as Kendrick Perkins and Thabo Sefalosha), and this team got into contention, with playoff berths, series wins, losses (such as a tough one to the eventual champion Dallas Mavericks in 2011). After all this, they are in striking distance from an NBA championship. Their General Manager Sam Presti did an excellent job building this team. He's definitely a candidate for sports executive of the last decade, in my opinion.

Also, it's always exciting to see a small market team to be in serious contention. (Too bad the Sacramento Kings during the Chris Webber years never got past this point, but I digress). The last time a "small market" team was this close to winning a championship, was the Utah Jazz, in 97 and 98. But, with Michael Jordan on the other side, it was kind of a hard sell that they were a "favorite" and would actually win, no matter how great they were, and despite having Stockton and Malone. But, in my opinion, this OKC team is different, because it looks to be that they will obviously be the clear favorite, no matter who comes out of the East. They've practically dominated the whole playoffs (with the exception of losing the first 2 games of the San Antonio series), and they've done it by beating the most dominant Western Conference teams in the last decade. It's funny, because since that Utah team in 98, the only teams who have made the NBA Finals since then were the 3 teams that they've beaten (Dallas, LA Lakers, and San Antonio).

But, another reason why I'm excited to see a small market team in the Finals, is because it shows and gives hope, that you don't have to be in a huge market to build a team right. With the era of free agency nowadays, it still shows that an organization that is built with strong team fundamentals, will still likely have an upper hand huge over a team over talented (yet over-hyped and over-priced) individuals. Now can you imagine the story lines if the Miami Heat ends up being the Thunder's opponent? With the way the NBA and David Stern seems to find a way for its best matchups of happening, I find it highly likely it will happen.

However, the most significant reason why I am highly excited the OKC Thunder is in the finals, is because the Washington Wizards are currently following this blueprint of building a team. I think I remembered Ted Leonsis saying himself, shortly after drafting John Wall in 2010, that they specifically are following a similar blueprint as the Oklahoma City Thunder. Build the team from the ground up by drafting the right young guys as cornerstones, suck for a few years (by design) if need be, and grow as a team. Since they blew up the team during the 2010 season by getting rid of their solid (some distracting) veterans, like Gilbert Arenas, Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood, and Antawn Jamison (just to name a few), they seemed to be heading in that direction. The Wizards should get another solid player from the draft this year, which could be a start of the team taking that next step. But that's another blog entry altogether.

I am excited to see what the OKC Thunder will do in the Finals. Like I said, I don't think they will lose in the Finals, no matter who is coming out of the East, even if it's the Miami Heat "dream team", but even if they don't win it this year, this team will be in contention for many years to come if they keep that core together.

No matter who OKC will be playing in the finals, it should be a fun matchup to watch. I am really looking forward to it, and will definitely be watching as much of it as I can. I'll likely occasionally blog about it too.

Something you wouldn't expect a lifelong basketball fan to say...

I have been a basketball fan for a LONG time. I remembered as far back as my days in Valley View Elementary school, that I enjoyed playing in the hardtop courts with my friends Brendan, Troy, and Barry (just to name a few). I've understood the basics of the game, and the rules aren't overly hard to understand nor are they very complicated. Too bad though, that as soon as I got into middle school, I sucked because I was short, nor was I too good of an athlete. I was in 3rd grade when Michael Jordan (my favorite player of all time), won his first NBA championship. I even wrote a biographical report about Michael Jordan in 5th grade. That's how much I loved basketball.

With that being said, I'm about to say something that you wouldn't from someone who has followed basketball for so long. As far as the NBA playoffs are concerned, the NHL hockey playoffs totally OWNS it!

In my opinion, here are the reasons why... I don't think you really have to understand the game of hockey fully, to truly appreciate it. It is so fast paced, that if you over think every strategy, you may get lost. Honestly, I haven't gotten into hockey until probably the late 90's. When the Caps made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Final in 1998, and there was some championship buzz in this area, that's when I really paid attention to it. There's a lot of action, with tons of hits, and physicality. Action never seems to stop in the NHL playoffs, and it's always going 110 mph.

The best part about the hockey playoffs is overtime. Overtime playoff hockey, is the best playoffs there is. It's not even close. You live and die (sometimes literally) with the hockey playoffs. I can't recall how many times my blood pressure seemed to have gone up with every "almost goals" I've experienced in the hockey playoffs.

The reason why I say all this, is that they hockey playoffs (in all likelihood) will end tonight. The Los Angeles Kings are currently playing the New Jersey Devils in the Stanley Cup Finals as I am typing this, and it's likely the Kings will end this series tonight with a sweep (they have been dominant). But the NHL playoffs have been exciting these past couple of months, with so much hockey overtime (including the first 2 games of this series). If you've never seen a minute of the hockey playoffs this year, you've done yourself a huge disservice. So your last chance is to catch it tonight.

Don't get me wrong, I still LOVE the NBA playoffs. If the OKC Thunder end up closing out the series tonight against the San Antonio Spurs, I will be ecstatic (as Kevin Durant is one of my favorite current players in the NBA, as he's a local guy). And, the Celtics vs Heat ECF series has been surprising and unexpected (with the Celtics being up 3-2). But even after all that, as a whole, the NHL Playoffs OWNED the NBA Playoffs this year.

The only playoff in sports, in my opinion, is better than the NHL Playoffs, is March Madness. I'll even put it slightly ahead of the NFL Playoffs. The so-called college football BCS is the absolute worst. However, since I do understand basketball more, I could still appreciate the NBA playoffs a lot. If both the Caps and the Wizards are in the playoffs and they are on the same night, it's going to be tough as to decide where my attention will go.

But whatever playoffs you'll be watching, try to enjoy it. But, still, try to catch the Stanley Cup Final game tonight. Like I said, it may be the last game of the season.

Meet Mini-OBE

In case you haven't seen him yet, check out mini #OBE!

I had the little guy made when 2012 began. I used some of the money I received from gifts during the December holiday season. I never wanted to pay more than $100 to get one of these made, but luckily, Groupon ran a promotion for AllBobbleheads.com around Chinese New Year where you can get a customized bobblehead for a much lower price by buying one of their vouchers. (I have a feeling they ran this promotion, because they didn't anticipate getting any sales because their Chinese factories were closed, and they had to still make money despite that they won't be producing any until February). Still, I decided to buy the Groupon, because it was such a good deal, even though I would have to wait a while.

Needless to say, it did take a little longer than expected. I didn't get the little mini-me until after Easter, leaving a total of 3 months in production.

However, I was quite satisfied with what they've done. Because of the few extra customizations (the "DC" hat, and the rubber bands), I had to pay a little extra, but I still didn't pay over $100. They did a fabulous job replicating me, as they got a good amount of the detail correct in the face, such as the nose, smile, and the dimples. Not to mention, it's handsome, and the head is a bit over sized, just like in real life.

As I said, I wanted to do this for a while, it's just the price and timing wasn't right. It would've been great to have this little guy around in the background when I was doing my monthly "message of destiny" video series, or when I was in conferences exhibiting and showcasing. This is a great way to sort of market yourself as a brand, and get yourself out there (no pun intended), regardless whether or not you are actually selling something. Not to mention, it's a great icebreaker! Many times when I check in using Foursquare or Facebook Places, I take a picture of the little guy as to where I am.

But, my brother Angelico swears that I'm copying him by doing this, as he brings his 3" Krillin (a character from Dragon Ball who closely resembles him) and takes pictures of it doing certain things and refers to it as himself. However, I've had this idea planted in my mind well beforehand, as a lawyer from the GKIC conference I attended in January 2010 has been doing this (although he didn't do it with social media), and Yoshi Tatsu (a wrestler from the WWE) has been doing it until his rival Tyson Kidd ripped off his action figure's leg in an episode of WWE NXT. Not to mention, it's not like my brother wears an orange gi, with a turtle kanji on it frequently.

One of the best cartoon franchises in the history of TV... EVER! (And it's currently on air)

Yes, I'm 30 years old, and I still watch cartoons. I'm not ashamed of it. I appreciate great fantasy action, magnificent storytelling, and the occasional humorous quips and allusions every now and then. It isn't really all too different from watching science fiction movies, sitcoms, dramas, or TV shows if you ask me. But I digress...


In my opinion, one of the best cartoons (or shows, in general) on TV right now, is on at 11:00 every Saturday mornings on Nickelodeon called "The Legend of Korra". This show is a sequel to the previous series "Avatar: The Last Airbender", which was regularly shown in Nickelodeon.


I didn't really get into the "Last Airbender" franchise until probably mid-late 2010 (maybe a little bit before I got into my blogging hiatus). The Nicktoons network was showing re-runs of the popular Nickelodeon series "Avatar: The Last Airbender" series after the newly premiered remake of "Dragon Ball Z (Kai)", which was the series I was really interested in (as I was a huge fan of the Dragon Ball franchise). I usually never turn a show off when the show I like is over, especially if there's nothing else on TV that's engaging. But, when I kept it on, I would see that each episode had some nice storytelling, so I couldn't helped be engaged.


But just to brief those who have yet to be familiar with this franchise, the setting is on a fictional depiction of Earth where certain human beings can control (or "bend") the one of the world's living elements; water, earth, fire, and air. And one of these "benders" can control each 4 of these elements, who is known as "The Avatar".


To make a long story short, the first series focused on an 11-year old protagonist named Aang, who was an "Airbender". Long before the events of the series, he ran away from his group of Airbenders because he was afraid of the responsibility of the power the Avatar was supposed to yield. He then got caught in a storm, and unknowingly used his "Avatar powers" to cryogenically freeze himself in a sphere of ice, for a hundred years.


Fast forward to the end of those hundred years, and the series begins. The fictional world has long been overpowered oppressed by the firebenders "aka the Fire Nation" and has been embroiled in a war and struggle of power against the other benders shortly after the hero first freezes himself. During this war, the firebenders have killed off Aang's Airbender race, leaving him as the "last airbender", and as the series begins, two main characters from the water tribe (a waterbender and her brother) finds the protagonist frozen in ice, and begins the adventures of the series, in which the hero has to master the other 3 elements he has to master, all the while, ending the 100 years war, to once again restore the world in balance. 

M. Night Shymalan actually directed and produced a live action movie based on this cartoon series not too long ago (which I DO NOT recommend that you check out, and pass judgement on the franchise based on that). The movie was outright terrible!

But without giving any spoilers, that series alone is probably as great (if not greater) than a lot of the classic cartoons from the late 80's-early mid 90's that I have grown up with. I will put this show up against greats such as Thundercats, Voltron, Batman the Animated Series, X-Men (from the Fox Kids block), and my anime favorites such as Dragon Ball and Ruroni Kenshin, and will expect it to hold it's own. So if you haven't checked out this series, I highly suggest you do so.


The current show on today "The Legend of Korra" is the show that's on now that's the sequel to this series. The setting takes place in a world 70 years after the events of the end of the previous series, in a slightly more modernized world from the last series (a crossbreed of circa 1920's China/New York). Aang, the hero of the previous series, has long since passed, and the new Avatar and protagonist, a waterbender named Korra, must accept the responsibilities of the Avatar, all the while, dealing with more modernized problems.


About only a half dozen episodes in, the series has been great. The series is darker than it's predecessor, and the action is as fierce, and slightly more fast-paced, and the storytelling remains great (as the same writers have also continued on to this series). The cast of voice actors also make the characters jump off the screen (who knew Bud Bundy was such a great voice actor). One voice I am notably impressed with (Steven Blum) voices the main antagonist of the show, who also voiced one of my all time favorite antagonists Makoto Shishio (from the Ruroni Kenshin anime). He does as great making his character in this series as badass as Shishio was.


In my opinion, this series may be on pace to surpass the high expectations it's predecessor brought upon it. The main reason why, is that the main writers are slated to write the whole series, where as they only wrote a good portion of the previous series. So far, it hasn't disappointed.


Unfortunately for me though, I never get to see each episode when it premieres (as I'm usually working on Saturday mornings). I usually catch it On-Demand a few days later (so no spoiler alerts here, please). Even if I have to wait, it's usually worth it.


But, if you're into great cartoons (or great television in general), I do highly recommend "Legend of Korra". And, if you haven't seen the preceding series, "Avatar: The Last Airbender", that should also be checked out. I promise you, if you are into great storytelling (like I am), you will be hooked. And as I recommended earlier, don't use M. Night Shymalan's movie as a gauging tool for this series.

Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure 2012

Tomorrow marks the day for Susan G. Komen's annual event here in DC. Komen holds all sorts of these runs all over the country, but it's usually held here in DC in the first Saturday of June.

As many of you who know me, I've been running this race for the past 3 years. My mom was had a lump on her breast on April of 2008, and she had a double mastectomy. She endured weeks of pain, and the side effects of her prescription medicine took it's toll on her. Today, she's a proud cancer survivor, but I would not want anyone to go through what she went through. Ever since, I've done what I could to support the advancement of research of breast cancer. What better way of doing it, than supporting this fine organization, which is the leading non-profit for this type of cause.

Unfortunately, for myself, due to my schedule, I will not be able to run the race this year. Running a full-fledged service business full time (practically, on your own), has several of its drawbacks (especially if your customers specifically ask for you). But, I still decided to sponsor my brother Angelico, who is running this race in behalf of this family.

Bringing the Dose Back

Didn't realize it's been a while since I have blogged. The last time I have was when the Vikings played the Redskins in the 2010 season. That's TOO long. I'm not exactly sure (or remember) why I indefinitely stopped blogging, but I must have had too many things on my mind in between then and now.

Not really going to get too much into what I've been up to in between now and then, but just to briefly elaborate, since then, I have turned 30, I shaved my head, and started running a business in the service industry. My family acquired a failing laundromat at July 2011, and I have been tasked to turn it around and ultimately make it a success. I have been definitely up for the challenge since then, and it is continued until now. I have indefinitely put my motivational ventures on hold to focus on this, but definitely not killed it as my inspirational speaking is, has always has a huge place in my heart as I can pin anything significant in my own life specifically to this. But, I still continue to inspire people daily with great public service, and with everything I do. (Not to mention, I still post the birthday videos that I'm known for, and do a speech every now and then just to stay sharp). But, as of right now, the timing right now really isn't right to go touring and get bookings, as I have other goals, and the world's perception of "expertise" is, in my opinion, wrongly skewed (won't get into that, but just to sum everything up in one word, all I have to say is "Snooki").

Come to think of it, over the past year and a half or so, I have come to realize that "motivation" or "inspiration" isn't really my passion, and never really has been. It's helping people, and overcoming challenges. I was just using speaking as a vehicle to fulfill that passion. Although there's no better thrill than to "work a crowd", the time isn't right and the world is not quite aligned. As I said, I will eventually get back into that, but as of now, I can express this passion in other ways.

As far as the world is concerned, there are way too many things that took place. If I took the time to think about each notable famous person that died, as well as all the major events that took place in news, pop culture, I will waste months on end, just staring in my computer trying to think about what to blog about and how to blog about it. Heck, if I just talk about what's been happening in the DC sports scene (which is inherently my other "passion"), I can fill a sports talk radio show with content for weeks on end.

But, as I was going to bed last night, I had so many thoughts I had to get out, so I had this strong feeling in my gut to bring this blog back. Now, I'm not going to make any guarantees as to what exactly I'll post about, and how frequently I will post, but I WILL post! I know for sure that I will not go almost 20 months without an update.

Also, because I'm bringing this back, why not do it in a somewhat different way? Depending on if I get reactions from my articles, I do want to be more interactive. So, if you see this posted blog on Facebook (facebook.com/Obedoza) or Twitter (@OBECorp), and have a comment about what I wrote, or should write about, definitely get back at me. Or, if I just have a lot of people react to something I have done in or out of cyberspace, I will definitely write about it here.

All I can say is stay tuned to what I have in store. Like I said, I'm not going to overhype anything (like I usually do), but I will do my best to keep it interesting, OBE-style. I will make another post soon, but hopefully, not too soon.

"DC" Skins PREgame #12 - vs Minnesota - Purple and Horned

First I want to get some more apologies out of the way for not blogging a lot more during this holiday break. I was spending some quality time with my family, mostly my nephew and niece. I hope you have had as nice and interesting of a few days as I have this holiday. Let's just say I am probably one of the most experienced single, child-rearing adults out there who has never actually sired a seed of his own, nor babysits for a living (that's a blog for another time). But, win or lose, since I've been consistent with doing my Redskins predictions week in and week out, I figured I should keep with it. I will make this short though.

The Vikings fired their coach this week. Does it mean that the organization and team will be inspired with new leadership and possibly play harder? Maybe. Take a look at the Cowboys.

With that being said, the Vikings still have been a mess as a team, and in the center of all that (literally and figuratively) has been their QB Brett Favre. His turnover numbers and passer rating are just plain atrocious, he's been playing hurt, and he's definitely had one of his worst years he's had in recent memory. And I didn't even get into his off-the field issues. (Let's just say that he's appropriate that he is a Viking, because his situation with Jen Sterger shows that he is one "horny" dude.) Favre is slated to start, but I do think the Vikings have a better chance if he gets out of the game (which, in my opinion, he may).

As far as the Redskins are concerned, even though the win against the Titans have gave them some renewed hope for the season, they are still a mess as an organization too. Not to mention, that win last week came with a huge price, as most of the players ended up banged up, or hurt considerably (as in the case of Clinton Portis and others, hurt for the whole year).

I think the Redskins will win this game. Though the Redskins are banged up (most especially on the offensive line), the offense should do enough, while their defense will probably carry the team by causing the Viking offense (mainly Favre) to make mistakes and put them in decent field position. However, I do think the Vikings will keep this game close. As I said, the Redskins are a dysfunctional organization as well, and some of that is going to show on the field somehow. Not to mention, though Favre will probably be expected to make mistakes, Adrian Peterson can ease him off a little bit on offense, as that Viking O-line is a lot more solid than the Redskins'. Furthermore, I did say earlier that the Vikes may have more of a chance if Bret Favre comes out sometime during the game. And with the history of the Redskins defense hurting people this year, there might be a chance he comes out... which may actually help them.

Final Prediction Redskins 21 Vikings 17

I just have a feeling this will be an ugly game, on both ends. And I think the Vikings the "ugliness" can hurt the Vikings more. As of now, it doesn't look like any serious championship contenders will be playing in this game, and it will probably show in the scoreboard.

The Redskins also have proven to play down to their competition, which is why I picked such a close score. But, I do think the Redskins need this game. They need all the wins they can get though, and they must pick up the games that they are expected to win down the stretch. Since they are at home, this could be one of those wins.

If the Redskins win, they will go 6-5. They simply can't go in a key matchup next week against the Giants at 5-6. Therefore, the sense of urgency should be up (despite what we've seen this season), and it should help make a difference. 

But, we'll see come roughly quarter after 4 PM EST.

"DC" Skins Postgame #11 - Titanic Effort Returns Hope

Yes... another late blog. I do realize this should have been posted about two days ago, but who's keeping track?

Anyway, after being left for dead after the massacre against the Eagles last Monday night on national television, the Redskins have gotten some hope back with this 19-16 overtime win against the Titans. This was a game that the Redskins had to win, and going into the game, it didn't look good because the Titans won all the games against the NFC East, and they were very banged up with a lot of key injuries. Not to mention, the Titans are just plainly a lot more talented than them.

As the game was played, it didn't look to good for the Skins initially as well. They allowed the ball deep into their own territory for the first Titans possession, then allowed a touchdown punt return during the next. But fortunately for them, they were only down 7-0. They responded a possession later and tied it at 7, but they could have easily been down by a lot.

Then, the injuries started coming. Special teams players started to go down, then some offensive linemen, then Clinton Portis (again), then more offensive linemen. They were banged up already to start off the game, and they started to lose even more players? It looked bad. Very bad. The coaches were moving people around the line, putting tackles as guards, players who played normally played on the left on the right side, and so on. That offensive line was a patchwork job, and it didn't look like it was going to hold up, especially against a defense that sacked the quarterback the most in the NFL.

But the Redskins offensive line really surprised me. Despite this line being banged up and abnormal, it still probably put up the best effort it has all season. McNabb was only sacked three times, and in most cases, they gave him time to throw the ball. The mistakes that McNabb made and the interceptions he threw were more on him than on his offensive line. There was even one interception he threw where he had forever to throw the ball. Along with the fact that Vince Young was replaced by a rookie quarterback in the 4th quarter, this gritty play of this offensive line, as well as key stops on defense kept the Redskins in it in the end, and the game came down to a Redskins field goal in the end of regulation, which wasn't made. Therefore, it went to overtime.

Overtime was more of the same. The Titans moved the ball a little bit, and depended on Chris Johnson to do so, but apparently the Redskins play made it clear that they would make Rusty Smith (Vince Young's replacement) try to beat them. And of course, he wasn't able to. And after they punted, and when the Titans gave the ball back to the Redskins, offense did it's thing and allowed McNabb to make a few plays. But at the same time, Titans also committed a lot of stupid penalties in this period, including a few unnecessary roughness and holding penalties. So, in the end, the Redskins moved the ball far enough so they had a chance at a field goal. Ironically, that field goal was a yard longer than the field goal that was missed to end regulation. However, Gano (the Redskins kicker) was able to boot it in for the win.

As I said, this is a good win for the Redskins, and it restored some hope in this town and showed that the season is not lost (yet). They beat a team that they weren't supposed to beat and are clearly more talented than them on paper with a very bad offensive line, after a demoralizing loss a week before. Therefore, people in DC have started to rejoice for the week, because the smiles are more apparent after the win. Not to mention, the "P" word could be back in the conversation if there happens to be a couple more key wins. And that starts next week, with a very winnable game against the Vikings (who has a geriatric quarterback with some off-the-field camera phone "issues" and also just fired their head coach).

But, with this win, people here in the DMV should feel good, for now. If they play with that same heart, as they get healthy, they will definitely get back into the postseason conversation. But, it's still very hard to say whether this win determines if this team will be playoff bound. It may be doubtful that the line will perform the way it did that day, and how well (or if) everyone heels up as the season goes on. 

For now, just take it for what it's worth... a win against a more talented Titans team. Whether it gives momentum throughout the upcoming games, we'll just have to wait and see. It does restore hope though. I always believed that hope is the rope of the faithful and loyal. And from living here all of these years, the fans of this team are one of the most faithful in the country. 

That being said, Redskins fans can have something to hang on to for now. Let's just see how long it hangs out there.

"DC" Skins PREgame #11 - at Tennessee - Remember the Titans

The Redskins are coming off one of the most disappointing losses in recent memory against the Eagles. In my opinion they simply have to get a win here to get back in the conversation as far as "playoff contenders". Most people aren't picking the Redskins to do a lot in this game, and that's understandable, considering that they stunk it up on National TV last week, and the Titans have some weapons on offense, and are pretty solid in defense. If they win a game that they are supposedly not to win, that will at least get a little of that bad taste out of their mouth, and get them confident for the next week.

But, as far as if it's actually gonna happen, that may be a whole different story. After this past week, most of the fans have been dejected and disappointed, and even the most loyal ones realistically believe they can't win this game, and to expect disappointment again. As it was said, Tennessee has way too many offensive weapons, with Chris Johnson, Vince Young, and Randy Moss (who was acquired not too long ago). And with the way the Redskins offense has been playing lately (mainly, the offensive line getting McNabb destroyed), the Titans D can shut them down.

I consider myself a pretty loyal Redskins fan. But realistically, like a lot of other Redskins fans out there, if you look at the situation realistically, it's just hard to pick them in anything right now. They're offensive line is terrible, they're missing a few key players on defense, and right now, they're just not a good team.

Prediction: Redskins 21 Titans 37

I will say, that Clinton Portis finally coming back should help the Redskins out a lot, and can possibly get McNabb that pass protection he needs, as a solid blocking running back. Ironically, Albert Haynesworth can be an ex-factor in this game too. He's coming back to his original team, and might be motivated to play, since that is where his brother died. Conversely, the way Shanahan and the defensive coaches play Haynesworth could have a huge say on this game as well.

As I always do whenever I picked the Skins to lose... I hope I'm wrong. But right now, all signs point to the Titans winning, and I just can't avoid those signs (especially if they're too obvious). Fortunately, realistically picking a team to win, and hoping for a win are two different things. So, although I'm doing the former, there's no reason that I can't believe in the latter.

But like I said, we'll see what happens.

My thoughts on Pacquiao vs Margarito - A Story of Playground Supremacy

I realize I am a week late for this blog. I meant to do this blog sooner, but I was out and about working for the community. Not to mention, I had a lot of things on my mind that I am not really at a liberty to discuss here.

But about this fight... if you are a Manny Pacquiao fan and/or you are a Filipino (which, in both cases, I am), then you loved this fight. From the introductions when he came out to AC/DC's "Thunderstruck" and Joe Esposito's "You're the Best" (from the Karate Kid Soundtrack), all the way to the Larry Merchant post-match interview, you were entertained if you were a Pacquiao fan.

Since I am clearly not a boxing analyst or expert, instead of telling you my specific thoughts of what took place during the match, I am going to summarize my thoughts through a story that some people may relate to when they were kids...

Imagine if you knew a kid who was probably one of the smallest in the playground. He was always short, and initially was grouped with all the small kids. Since this kid is a small kid, he had to continuously prove himself. So in time, when kids his size pushed him back, he continued to hold his own and knock them down, until they were no longer a challenge for them. He then became the toughest little kid in that group.

As time went along, bigger kids started to notice him. These kids are part of 7 different groups, with each group having bigger kids than the previous group. Many of these kids tried to get a piece of this kid, but, as time went along, he got stronger. When each of the top kids in each of these groups tried to push him, he kept knocking them down.

After beating some of the best kids from the last 6 groups, out comes a very big kid from that last 7th group. Now the kid has some doubters that he might not do so well. He already went a tough road beating up kids from the last 6 groups. To add on, this big kid towered over the little kid. As big as this kid is, he could have easily been part of the 8th group. Not to mention, because the little kid got so popular standing up to the bigger kids, his classmates elected him class president. He was taking a lot more responsibilities, and probably cannot focus on standing up to the bigger kids as much. Therefore, there were a few people saying that he might not win if he fought this bigger kid, who was naturally much bigger than him.

However, the time came when the little kid had to confront the biggest kid he's ever seen. When the big kid tried to push the little kid around, not only did the little kid push back, but he hit him a lot... and I mean a lot. He hit the big kid so much, that his face was messed up really bad. And to add on, when it was obvious the big kid was already beaten, the small kid decided to show mercy and not "make a statement" by knocking him down.

In my opinion, this story of playground supremacy may somewhat mirror Pacquiao's journey through boxing. He started his career as a flyweight, then he kept moving up, beating guys and winning world championships in 7 different weight classes. This all then culminated into an 8th world championship in his fight against Margarito, who was a pretty big super welter-weight (Margarito had to cut weight to get this fight, while Pacquiao had to bulk up). And despite being elected to the Philippine Congress and taking a lot more responsibilities and having a lot more distractions, he managed to do his job and easily win his fight against Margarito, so much so, that he didn't need to send a message by going for a knockout at the end of the fight.

However, if I could add something else to the story, to make it even more accurate... a kid who's arguably as good as this kid (Mayweather), needs to get a confrontation with this kid to settle who really is the best in the playground. Every kid in this playground wants to see this confrontation, and kids from other playgrounds all over the world do as well. However, there's always an excuse being made (mostly from the other kid) to prevent this from confrontation from happening.

I doubt Pacquiao will move up another weight class and go for a world title in a 9th weight class. That would be unprecedented if that happened. But right now, the only fight that the boxing world wants to see, and the only fight that matters, is Pacquiao vs Mayweather. Hopefully, they would find a way to make it happen, but as it looks right now, with Mayweather's legal problems, it's highly unlikely that it will anytime soon.

But before I end this entry, I just thought I'd throw out one more factoid out there (which I posted after the fight). Manny Pacquiao has more wins all year in Cowboys Stadium than the Dallas Cowboys (with Pacquiao having two wins in 2010, while the Cowboys are still winless in their home stadium in the 2010 season). And as a Redskins fan, that gives me a comfort. LOL

"DC" Skins Postgame #10 - Shocked and Embarassed

I'm not going to say too much about this game. Simply put, it was tough to watch if you're a Redskins fan. The team got embarrassed, humiliated, degraded, or any other negative verb you can throw out there that summarizes pure disappointment.

I am not going to blog about it, not only because it may be a little tough to do so as a fan, but also, the local, as well as the national reaction to the overall Redskins performance (as well as the overall Eagles performance) is practically mutual... the game was not even close. (And that's an understatement).

Instead of talking about it, I'll post a rant from one of the more respected sports radio shows out here in this area, because of the unbiased commentary. This was from Chad Dukes and Lavar Arrington from 106.7-FM "The Fan". Chad Dukes was mad, and really exhibited the passion, and frustration the fans from this area have been going through in years, and just shows how loyal the fans are in this town.

If anybody from the organization heard this rant, I hope they took some notes. People are really disappointed in major failure and expect the best from what they pour their heart out to, as it is in real life.

With that being said, for this team as it relates to this season... this is "Rock Bottom". And when you're at your very worse, you can only get better, which is the way I see it. Although I am probably as disappointed as Chad Dukes with this performance, I always try to find the positive that may come out of a bad situation.

We'll see how they play against another solid team in the Tennessee Titans next week, to see if that pain can actually serve as a motivator to turn the season around. But with this performance, even though I am cautiously optimistic, I still remain more skeptical that this team can turn it around for this season.

So until then, we'll see how it goes. But I will say right now, since I put a lot of faith in my team in that last prediction and lost a lot of it, it may be hard to pick them for the rest of the season.

I will say, that I was right about one thing though. I was right in titling the pregame entry "Redemption". That game yesterday was indeed "Redemption", but it was just more appropriate for the other team.

"DC" Skins PREgame #10 - vs Philadelphia - Redemption Part 2

This is only going to be a quick thoughts blog, just because it a bit after 8:15 PM kickoff is in more or less 15 minutes. I'm just going to get a few quick thoughts in, and then my predictions.

First thought... the Redskins had a very long bye week to sit on their loss. They played the early game in Week 8, and play the final Monday Night game in Week 10. Unless they have huge injuries (like Clinton Portis) there should be no excuses that they aren't prepared or refreshed for this match.

In the two weeks leading into this matchup, all that the DC sports media can talk about is benchgate... did Shanahan do the right thing benching McNabb?, how would this affect McNabb and contract negotiations?, the long-term future of the Redskins?. But whatever happened two weeks ago, is the past. The Redskins have a chance to forget what happened two weeks ago with a huge victory tonight and right the ship (so to speak).

Some breaking news took place today as well. McNabb finally signed his contract extension. This is important because he doesn't have to worry about a contract anymore, and he can just focus mainly on football.

I do think the Redskins are going to win this game, but it's gonna be far from easy. The Eagles are coming off one of their biggest wins of the season against Peyton Manning and the Colts, a team that the Redskins lost to. The Eagles defense were able to contain Peyton Manning and the offense, and Mike Vick and their running back were able to capitalize on the suspect running defense of Indy. 

With that being said, the Redskins should be prepared with their two weeks off. McNabb and his team needs to redeem themselves after letting an opportunity slip two weeks ago. And given it's the Eagles and it's McNabb's former team and it's Monday Night football, they should be giving a bit more effort.

Whether I'm right and wrong in this prediction, we can all agree that this game is a crossroads of destiny for this Redskins team. In my opinion, whatever the results will be will be a huge indicator of how they will finish the season.
